1) attenuate and remove some hiss: I use this between my Palm PDA and my portable headphones. The output from the palm headsphone socket is pretty hissy especially with low impedance headphones. The Shure volume control doies a pretty good job at reducing the hiss - not perfect but it is enough to make an audible difference - oh and you can use it as a volume contriol as well.
2) This is necessary for all iPod users: Because I cannot get any iPod to have a volume low enough for my ear comfort, I use the Shure Attenuator to control the volume. They do not want it used this way, but it is a true "ear saver."
3) Perfect For Shure Sound Isolating Earphones: I always had problems adjusting the volume of my Shure Earphones because the dials on the players are not fine enough to get just the right level. This is the answer. I set the volume on the player and then do the fine tuning on this.
